Common media data

PRESTOplay for web implements the Common Media Data standards so the player can cooperate more closely with your content delivery network (CDN) infrastructure. This page covers the web SDK’s CMCD configuration.

Review Common media data first for the shared CMCD and CMSD definitions and specifications.

CMCD configuration

Enable CMCD by setting cmcd.enabled to true in CmcdConfiguration.

Simple configuration:

player.open({
  source: '...',
  cmcd: {
    enabled: true,
    deliveryMode: 'headers', // or 'query'
    contentId: 'abcd1234',
  }
});
  • Delivery mode defines how the data is sent: headers sends it via HTTP headers, query sends it via URL query parameters.

  • Content ID is a unique string identifying the current content, up to 64 characters. It stays consistent across sessions and devices, and is defined and updated at the discretion of the service provider.

Advanced configuration:

player.open({
  source: '...',
  cmcd: {
    enabled: true,
    deliveryMode: 'headers',
    contentId: 'abcd1234',
    sessionId: 'abcdefgh-1234-abcd-1234-abcdefghijkl',
    rtpMultiplier: 5
  }
});
  • Session ID is a GUID identifying the current playback session. If omitted, an internal clpp session ID is used.

  • RTP multiplier scales the requested throughput (rtp) field. It helps prevent buffer saturation from over-delivery and supports fair-share delivery, so each client receives the throughput it needs and no more. The default is 5 — a segment encoded at 2 Mbps is delivered at no more than 10 Mbps.
